Rossway Safety Systems developed a unique access solution to remove and reinstate 28,000 sq.m roof area. In addition to the roof replacement the work also involved the refurbishment of the steel structure with replacement of some of the structure and repainting of the existing steelwork.
In order to undertake the work 6 scaffold structures were built, each one being 20m x 20m on plan and 9.5m high.
These structures each weighed 24 tonnes and to eliminate the risk associated with dismantling and re-erecting the scaffolding they were moved on air skates.
The air skates were located at strategic positions at the base of the scaffolding and compressed air was pumped into the air skates which allowed the scaffolding to "float". With the scaffolding floating it could easily be moved, in less than 5 minutes a distance of 20m to the new location, by only 2 operatives.
